History

India possesses rich heritage and its contributions in various fields especially in the field of mathematics have been globally recognized. Aryabhatta, not only introduced the concept of “Zero” but also made significant contributions in the field of mathematics and astronomy. Keeping his legacy alive, another Indian named as Swami Bharati Krishna Tirath ji rediscovered Vedic Mathematics between the years 1911-1918 from Atharva Veda which is why it was called as Vedic Mathematics. His findings were published in his book on Vedic Mathematics.

What is Vedic Mathematics?

Vedic Mathematics deals with the concepts of core mathematics. It is based upon 16 Sutras (Formulae) and 14 sub-sutras (Sub Formulae) which can be used for solving problems involved in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, matrices and other areas. Each sutra of Vedic Maths covers a wide range of applications with the object of unifying diverse aspects of mathematics. The Vedic maths finds applications in engineering, medicine, sculpture, bioinformatics and other related fields. It is also being used in transformations, solving equations, algebraic division, matrices, analytic geometry and in other areas. It must be emphasized that Vedic Maths highlights the mental processes and principles that take place in the mind of anyone engaged in mathematical activity. It deals with human psyche by providing insights into mathematics. It does not exclude more widely known methods but provides faster oral alternative by humanizing mathematics.

For example: Only traditional multiplying mathematical methods are used For multiplying two numbers together in Vedic Maths using Vertically and Crosswise one line sutra. Vedic maths only couples brevity and efficiency.

It must be emphasized that although, because of its origin, it is rightly called ‘Vedic Maths’, the Maths it deals with, is universal and does not require either the knowledge of Sanskrit nor has any relation with the Vedas. Only prerequisite for mastering Vedic Maths is learning of Tables.

Benefits of using Vedic Maths:

Its usage makes mind sharp and agile. By increasing intelligence, it enables us to take quick decisions on complex issues with the following significant advantages:

  • It virtually converts us into human computers.
  • It helps us to score better in various competitive examinations such as CAT, CET, SAT, Banking etc., leading to a settled career.
  • Increases our ability for making quick calculations.
  • Increases our logical thinking and intelligence. It makes a person out of the box planner who is capable of taking important decisions quickly.
  • Persons who are allergic to numbers and formulae start developing great liking for Maths by wiping out their phobia of numbers.
  • Finds applications in developing technologies eg. fields of Digital Signal Processing (DSP), Chip Designing, Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), High Speed Low Power VLSI Arithmetic and Algorithms, RSA Encryption System etc.

It won’t be wrong to say that Vedic Maths is a Fun Maths, which not only provides faster mental routes for problem-solving but also develops strategic thinking. It greatly reduces the fear of number and mathematical concepts.
